Stryj: A Family Survives

by Howard Edelstein

My father and his mother, father and sister were one of the few immediate families to survive the Holocaust intact. This is a story of their survival. They were saved through the efforts of non-Jews who risked death in hiding them.

My father was born in the city of Stryj, Poland (now Ukraine), in the area called Galicia, on April 30, 1927 in one of his grandmother Gross's apartments. My grandfather Samuel Edelstein and his brother-in-law ran cloth supply store. In 1935 my grandfather decided he wanted to be a farmer. He found an Austrian partner and rented land from a Polish nobleman named Bielsky. Their farm was in the village of Gaje-Nizne.
